Qira'at has a precise vocabulary. Learning these terms early prevents confusion in every later lesson.

| Sanad | The unbroken chain of teachers back to the Prophet ﷺ |
| Mutawatir | Mass-transmitted, establishing certainty |
| Shadh | An irregular reading outside the accepted transmissions |
| Ijazah | A written authorisation to teach a reading, issued by a qualified teacher |
